Memory Verse:

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!” (Isaiah 52:7).

Throughout the years of history, men have pondered the most profitable activity in which to engage themselves. Myriads have been the goals that men have set for themselves as the ultimate or highest possible degree of usefulness while on earth. The financier has used his skill to obtain and distribute wealth; the poet has thrilled the hearts of millions with the ability to arrange and produce rhythm with words; the musician has often brought serenity and harmony to mankind, while the artist portrays his ability on the canvas for all to behold. But, without doubt, the highest calling and occupation ever to thrill and hold the heart of man is the call of God to the winning of souls for the Kingdom of Heaven. Not only does this call contain the greatest of earthly joys when followed but it is also inherent with the promise of eternal reward. “They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever” [Daniel:12:3]).

Evangelism is the proclaiming of the Gospel message with its promise of eternal life through the atonement made by Jesus’ in His Sacrificial death and triumphant resurrection. God has a chosen instrument – His redeemed people – with which to spread the Gospel throughout the earth. The good news of salvation has rung in the hearts of men and has been proclaimed in many forms and ways from the day that Jesus ascended into Heaven.

God is looking for men and women today who will cut the shoreline, launch out into the deep, take hold of the promises of God, and bear witness of the Truth. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” [Matthew:28:19-20]).

Item 1: What is Evangelism? Evangelism is the publishing of the good message of salvation to mankind. [Isaiah:52:7]; [Acts:1:8]; [James:5:20]; [Matthew:24:14]; [Luke:24:47]; [Mark:16:20].

Item 2: Who are to be evangelised?
a) Children: Why is it important to evangelise them? Children are tender-hearted and the first impressions created in them in their early stage of life will remain with them forever. [Genesis:18:19]; [Proverbs:22:6]; [Deuteronomy:6:7-9]; [Ephesians:6:4]; [2 Timothy:3:14-15]; [Mark:10:13-14].

b) Adults; how? In the business world, people are very active, advertising their goods to others everywhere and at all times. Christians have a better eternal ware to advertise to the world, that is, the Gospel which is to all, and for all. It is the happy business of God’s people to proclaim its truth wherever man can be found, especially now that many don’t wish to go to church. Our evangelistic outreach should include regular service held in the church, street campaign, house to house visitation, visit to Hospitals, Prisons, Old people’s homes, and Disabled Children’s Homes, School Visits, Communication – sending tracts and letters, personal conduct and testimonies etc. [Hebrews:10:25]; [Acts:2:41-42]; [Matthew:25:35-40]; [Luke:14:21-23]; [James:1:27]; [Hebrews:13:22].

Item 3:
a) Who is an Evangelist? A preacher of the Gospel.

What are his attributes?
i) An evangelist must first be a partaker of the fruits. [2 Timothy:2:6]; [John:6:28-29]; [John:15:4-7]; [John:3:3-7]; [John:17:17-19]; [Acts:1:8].

ii) He must know of the doctrine and rely on God’s Spirit and His Word for discernment, wisdom and power [John:7:16-17]; [Acts:18:24-26]; [Colossians:3:16].

iii) He must be sent of God through the Church. [Matthew:10:5-8]; [Luke:10:1-3]; [Acts:8:14-15]; [Acts:13:2-3]; [Acts:22:10].

Those not called and not sent of God will make a shipwreck of the faith.

b) What does he preach? All the Doctrine of Christ: Salvation, Sanctification, Baptism of the Holy Ghost, Divine Healing, No Divorce and Remarriage, Restitution, Trinity, Second Coming of Christ, New Heaven and New Earth, etc. (See our Gospel Literature). [Matthew:28:19-20]; [1 Timothy:1:3]; [Revelation:22:18-19]; [2 Timothy:4:2-5]; [Titus:1:9-11]; [Romans:16:17-18].

Item 4: Why do we have to evangelise people?
a) People need to hear the Gospel preached to them in order to be saved. [Romans:10:14-17]

b) It is binding on the redeemed to evangelise. [Matthew:28:19-20]; [1 Corinthians:9:16]; [Acts:5:18-20], [Acts:5:28-29]; [Mark:5:19-20]; [Ezekiel:33:7-9].

The Spirit of the Lord, speaking through the mouth of the prophet showed the uncertainty of life and the urgency of the Gospel message. Mankind is likened unto grass, and his life expectancy as the flower of the field. [Isaiah:40:6-7]). From the standpoint of eternity, the above statement is especially true. Without God’s love and mercy to spare and protect the sons of men, none would live out their allotted days. Every human being is invested with a soul that will live throughout eternity in one of two places – either in Heaven or in Hell. To be certain that his eternal home will be with God in Heaven, a person must have faith in Jesus Christ and be obedient to all His commands. “Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” [Acts:4:12]).

The urgency of the Gospel message can thus be seen, and the responsibility of publishing the Good News falls upon those who have received the love of God in their hearts. The Scripture says: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” [Romans:10:13-15]). “The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it” [Psalms:68:11]).

Oh God, give us more men and women to work for the glory of God at the expense of their natural wants and wishes in order to win Africa for Christ. Amen.
