Some of the people who came from Portland invited Mother to hold services in their church. It was far from a fancy place, nothing but an old building that had formerly been a blacksmith’s shop at the corner of Second and Main Streets in the south part of downtown Portland, Oregon. It had been cleaned up and was being used for a place of worship.
At noon on Christmas Day, 1906, Mother arrived in Portland, and at 3:00 p.m. she was in that little hall ready to assume her responsibility. God blessed the meetings and her preaching brought results.
It was not too long until the one in charge was more than willing to turn the work over to her. When the church came under her supervision, the taking of collections was discontinued, much to the amazement of the former pastor. He said, “Who is going to be responsible if no collections are taken?” Though Mother had no financial backing, except that which she received from God, she said, “I will be responsible!” Only through freewill offerings and tithes were the needs of the church maintained. From that time on, God prospered the Gospel work both spiritually and financially.
