I was born into the Anglican Mission, but there was no genuine spiritual progress. When I came to Lagos, somebody introduced me to the Church of the Lord (Aladura), where I met Brother Sofodunrin. Brother Olarinde was the pastor of that church. In 1953, we heard about the Apostolic Faith Church and how God was performing wonders through the salvation of souls. Salvation, to us, was strange! We did not understand what they meant by salvation. I was part of the delegation of about six or eight people asked to come and see what Apostolic Faith was doing with a view to going back to improve the standard of operation in our own church at Lafiaji.
The Apostolic Faith Church was situated at 22 Simpson Street at the time. When we came, of course, we came with our jotters with a view to writing down things with which we were going to criticize the organization. But before we knew what was happening, the Spirit of God started to work in our lives. The Spirit of God started to speak to me in particular about the misdemeanor, the sin, and the waywardness in my life. I began to wonder what kind of Church this was. The highest attendance then was under 100. But I was perturbed each time there was service. The Spirit of God would be telling me about certain things I had done in the past. And the Spirit of God was not just talking generally but specifically. He told me some of the sins I had committed. He reminded me of the time I recommended a book to my pupils, which was available at the bookshop. I got 50 shillings from them but I never bought the book nor returned the money before I came to Lagos. God also reminded me of how I had been cheating the government from 1948 to 1952 by not paying my tax.
Whenever they brought the bill, I would tear it into pieces and would say, 'Who has time for this?' God told me that if I would go to Heaven I must not cheat the government.
God brought to my notice that I had defrauded the Nigerian Farmers' Bank for five years by stealing their stationery. The most important thing I stole was the cashier's stamp, which the cashier used every morning to stamp all the documents that he worked upon or sent out. I stole it and kept it with me. I also committed another crime, which could have earned me 7 to 14 years imprisonment. I impersonated a policeman. It was in The Apostolic Faith that the Holy Spirit convicted me of all my sins.
I made up my mind that I would not go back to The Apostolic Faith. So, I walked out of the church premises. For three months, I did not go there. But it wasn't long when I realized that “the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword'' (Hebrews 4:12) and there is nobody who can hide from it. Any place I went, I used to hear a Voice saying, “Olu, thief; Olu, thief…''I could not suppress this Voice which was repeatedly accusing me of being a thief.
The Apostolic Faith Church is a place where you cannot avoid coming in contact with the living God and His Spirit. When I could not suppress the Voice, I came back. Under the ministry of Rev.& Sister Akinboye, I got saved on a wonderful day. After the service, the couple prayed with me on the altar until I prayed through. I was living at 27 Kakawa Street then. The day I got saved, I had only one penny on me as a poor, jobless young man. But the joy of salvation so filled my heart that night that I trekked home and spent the one penny left with me to buy beans for supper. I woke up the following day with nothing! No work, no education, no money! Nothing at all. But I had something that was greater, more important, more beneficial and more valuable than anything and that was the joy of salvation. That was in 1953.
