There is nothing as glorious and joyful as dying the death of the righteous and having the blessed assurance of eternal bliss when the earthly life is about to fade out. Our cherished Rev. Soyinka had often said in his sermons that a Bible Christian need not be afraid of physical death because death is the passport to everlasting glory.
We saw this vividly demonstrated by him in the closing days of his life. He preached his last sermon on Sunday 22nd August, 1999, titled “A Broken Spirit and AContrite Heart,” a parting counsel to the fold he dearly loved. Like Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7, 8, he emphatically said, “Mission accomplished” and then re-echoed Luke 2:29,30.
“Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: Formine eyes have seen thy salvation.” He concluded the sermon by asking two little girls from the Elementary Sunday School Department to sing the following song with action:
Away far over Jordan,
We'll meet in that land,
O won't it be grand
Away far over Jordan,
We'll meet in that beautiful land so grand!
He then requested the whole congregation to pair up and join in rendering the song. What a memorable parting! That was not the only occasion when he served notice of his transition. The London brethren who attended the 1999 Camp meeting lodged with him in his official residence. In his last morning devotion with them on Monday, 23rd August, his farewell words were, “If we do not meet again on this earth, we will meet at Jesus' feet.” Unable any longer to contain his emotion, he withdrew from them in tears.
