In the midst of this period of spiritual darkness, the candle of faith still burned within the hearts of consecrated Christians. And in the 19th century, numbers of people throughout the United States dedicated themselves to prayer. Noon-hour prayer meetings became the order of the day and so great was the attendance in some locations that their quarters had to be enlarged. They prayed anyplace they could gather to pray, in churches, in theatres, in public resorts, or any building available.
As a result of nation-wide prayer, a succession of revivals occurred in the United States and continued practically all through the century. These revivals were marked with great spiritual success and their influence did not stop in America but extended across the waters to other countries where God poured out His Spirit and blessings upon those who sought His righteousness.
