At one of the jail meetings, when the minister asked if any prisoner would like to give his testimony of a change of heart, a man immediately arose to tell of his experience. He had received a small book of one of the Gospels, on which his name was written. As he looked at it he pondered the thought that his name had not been written in the Lamb's Book of Life, and in his soul he desired to know that he was right with God. He said:

"I got down on my knees and prayed – and you fellows here know that the last few weeks I have been praying – I admitted the trouble was all my fault, and God made a change in my life. You may say that a man who has smoked cigarettes, and cursed for 25 years, cannot quit in a minute; but I am a witness that it can be done." Another inmate got up and said, "I want to say that he is telling the truth because I 'cell' with him, and he doesn't swear, and he doesn't smoke any more."
