One whose conversion and testimony can never be forgotten was that of a traveling salesman who came into the city of Portland, riding like a prince on the velvet cushions of a first-class coach. Though decked with diamonds and wearing the finest of clothes, underneath was a heavy, broken heart because of his sins.
At twenty-three years of age he had a fine home, beautiful wife and child, a successful business, and soon was rated one of the largest retail advertisers in the state of Iowa. One year later, he went to the wall, bankrupt, because he had spent his money too freely in a life of sin. In his testimony, he said, “Sin robbed me of my wife and child, and robbed me of my business. I was scoffed at and called a fool because of my failure. Later, when I became a traveling salesman, I continued to spend my money for drink and sin. One day, in my hour of grief, after being on a three-months’ drunk, without character or principle, without health or virtue, without home or friends, I was taken by a businessman from my hotel to an Apostolic Faith meeting. There I looked at the glowing faces and said, ‘Surely God is in this place.’ I had tried everything else, and it had failed me. They told me at this church that God would make a man out of me. That challenged my honesty. The question was, ‘Would I pay the price? Would I come clean? Would I surrender my life to God?’ I raised my hand and asked them to pray, and I prayed. God brought the victory. He broke every fetter. He set me free. He gave me more than victory over sin. He gave me peace that flows like a river.
“After God saved me, I worked for eight years at hard labor, paying back hundreds of dollars in making restitution. I solicited the services of Dun and Bradstreet to find those I had wronged long before.
“These many years tell the story that I am not a drunkard, not diseased in body, but healed and delivered, saved and justified, sanctified by the Blood of Christ, baptized in His Spirit, and have victory and power in my life. It is good to serve the living God.”
