A number of years ago a disheartened woman left a city in California, not caring where her journey terminated. On Christmas day she arrived in the city of Portland; and that night started uptown to a theater. At the corner of Sixth and Burnside Street, something held her back and she could not take another step. While standing there she heard what she thought must be an angels' chorus singing. Looking across the street she saw The Apostolic Faith "lighthouse" and decided to turn her footsteps toward the church. In a Gospel meeting her burden was lifted and she found real happiness and satisfaction.

A man, hardened in sin, had often seen the sign, "Jesus, the Light of the World" over our church, and the Lord had spoken to him a number of times saying, "That is the place for you to go." One night as he sat in a card room he realized his sins had caught up with him. He had a serious heart condition and felt he could be fatally stricken any moment. The Lord once again spoke to his heart, this time saying: "You had better do something." He did. He came stumbling upstairs into a meeting and could hardly wait until the sermon was finished, so eager was he to pray and seek the face of God. Today he stands a living witness to the power of God to deliver from the bondage of sin, to heal the sick and afflicted body, and to keep one living a life of victory.

As years passed, the Spirit of God faithfully dealt with more and more souls. As the congregation increased, additional space was needed, and in 1927 the adjoining property in the block, on Sixth Avenue, was purchased to take care of future expansions.
